140 students from Eastern Bulgaria are currently enrolled at the school. Their education is carried out on three levels:
THE FIRST LEVEL includes blind and visually impaired children with normal intellect. They follow the regular national curriculum and study regular school subjects. The graduates can continue their education in the institutes of higher education.
THE SECOND LEVEL includes blind and visually impaired students with additional impairments as one of them is mild intellectual deficiency. These students are trained under adapted reduced curricula and after 9 years training can vocational qualification.
THE THIRD LEVEL includes blind and visually impaired students with additional disabilities as one of them is moderate intellectual deficiency. These students are trained under individual mostly functional curricula. The basis of the individual program is the correct periodical assessment. These students do not acquire a certificate for completing a grade or level of education. They receive a certificate for acquired skills foreseen in their individual programs.
The school teaching deafblind children too.
There are three special programs for all students:
• Orientation and Mobility;
• Useful daily Living Skills;
• Low Vision.
The special training is individual.
The school also has outreach Early Intervention and Integrated Education Services, serving 31 integrated students.
All students are offered some additional activities according to their talents like classical instruments – piano or violin, folk singing, folk instruments, folk dances, art therapy, as well as sports activities – Track and Field, Goalball, Table Tennis and Judo.
These extracurricular activities give our students an opportunity to show their talents out of the school on national and international level and contribute to their socialization.
